Johnny Cash, singer/songwriter was born in 1932 in Arkansas. His early music compositions shared influences of local country and gospel music.
Johnny Cash was only 12 when he started playing the guitar and after serving in the armed forces, he ended up fronting a band called the “Tennessee Two” with guitarists Marshall Grant and Luther Perkins. Their sound was a mixture of blues and country and western music, which was labeled “rockabilly” by people in the record industry. Later on, when they introduced a drummer by the name of W.S. Holland to the group, they changed their name to “Tennessee Three”.
Johnny’s second release called “Cry Cry Cry” back in 1955, made #14 on the billboard charts and with help from Sun Records producer Sam Phillips, he was introduced to and joined an influential collection of artists, namely Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, taking on the name “The Million Dollar Quartet”.
Johnny Cash, in 1956, recorded his big hit “Folsom Prison Blues” and that very same year, his song “I Walk the Line” produced his first #1 country hit. In 1957 he released his debut album called “Johnny Cash with his Hot & Blue Guitar”.
Johnny Cash passed away in 2003 due to complications with diabetes. In 2005, the story of his love affair with June Carter, who became Cash’s second wife, was made into a film, called “Walk the Line”, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.
